Chicago failed for a few reasons:
1. The city wanted to host the Olympiads according to the city’s own contract; the IOC doesn’t like it (reason why Chicago was the first city discarded among the 4 finalist);
2. Chicago wanted to build a temporary infrastructure for the Games, and the IOC doesn’t like it either; they like to leave a positive impression on a host city, which Rio de Janeiro embraced. Brazil is investing over 30 billion dollars in the city of Rio helping out in its infrastructure.
3. President Obama would have helped with his presence, but when he showed up in Copenhagen it was already too late. Brazilians had been working hard to make sure they’d get to host the Olympic Games, as they’d been trying for a long time (forever! lol), and were never able to host until now.
President Obama put it in a nice way: “they’ve (Brazil) never hosted the Olympics”. He knows how important it is for Brazil to host the Games, it will inspire a continent, 400 million people.
So, after Chicago and Tokyo were declassified, Madrid would have had more chances than Rio due to its infrastructure. However, the Olympiads of 2012 are going to take place in London (in the same continent as Madrid), and the IOC likes to vary it a bit, to go to different continents. Most of the votes from Chicago, Tokyo and cities in Europe went to Rio, because other major European cities want to host the 2020 Olympics, such as Paris, Berlin, and Rome.

@datboiaintshit ha man Rio has huge favelas but its cuz Rio can’t hide its poor side as all other big cities in the world do. cuz it aint large, and i guess ur right about that some how the olimpics will help Rio, but accept that brazil becomes a good place, and its getting better following the pace of the world, but Rio won because it deserved nobody can deny it. god bless america !!
