Oscar-winning director Stephen Spielberg has resigned as artistic advisor to the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing. He says his conscience will not allow him to continue in the role while the genocide continues in Darfur. He says that China needs to do more to end the suffering there. Spielberg had written a letter to Chinese president Hu Jintao requesting a meeting to discuss the issue, but received no response. His announcement comes on the same day as a letter was sent from Nobel Peace laureates to the chinese presidents urging a change in it’s policies towards Khartoum. In resigning from his advisory post, Spielberg joins the cause of actress and activist Mia Farrow, who has made it her mission to use the Olympic Games to put pressure on China to use its influence in Sudan to bring an end to the Darfur crisis. [MIa Farrow, Actress]: “We don’t want to boycott the Olympics; no one wants to hurt the athletes. But we want the sponsors to step up. It cannot be business as usual. Personally, if I were a sponsor, I’d take my business elsewhere. This is blood money.” In more than four years of conflict in Sudan’s western region of Darfur, 200000 people have died and 2.5 million have been driven from their homes, according to estimates from international experts.

The World Capital will serve as headquarter for the World Assembly and permanent basis for World Cup and Olympic Games and other international sportive, cultural or musical events. World Cap will also be inhabited by world citizens with independent passports and visas without being under jurisdiction of any country in the world.
