A group of local swimmers got some advice — and encouragement — from a an Olympic medalist Wednesday. “Do not give up even if you don’t immediately succeed,” Kristy Kowal told members of the recently combined Diplomats and Lancaster Family Y Swim Club. The Berks County native won a silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia. She set one world record and eight American records and was the first woman in US history to win a world championship in the 100-meter breaststroke. While visiting the team’s practice at the Kunkel Aquatic Center at Franklin & Marshall College, Kowal, 33, shared her experiences from international competition, demonstrated strokes, offered coaching techniques and encouraged swimmers.
